Commission's President visits Malta
HRH The Duke of Kent has been President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for over 40 years. He is actively involved in the work of the Commission and regularly attends events and when possible visits our cemeteries and memorials around the world.

Last month The Duke of Kent completed a tour of Malta, accompanied by the Director of Western Mediterranean Area. During his tour he met Commission staff and inspected many of our cemeteries and also the Malta Memorial which commemorates 2,300 airmen with no known grave.
His visit also coincided with the arrival of evacuees from Libya, so during his visit he took the opportunity to greetsome of them as their ship docked in Valletta.
More information about our work and information about those commemorated in Malta can be found in our Malta at War leaflet.
Rugby Remembers
Rugby Remembers: Rosslyn Park Rugby Club, London
Stephen Cooper, one of our readers, contacted us about the project to remember those from Rosslyn Park Rugby Club who died during the First World War.
Rosslyn Park, a venerable rugby club founded in 1879, has no memorial to its Great War dead. Its Second World War fallen, including Prince Obolensky, are remembered, but not those from 1914-18. Theory has it that a marble plaque was lost when the club moved in 1956.
When the research started, there was no Roll of Honour, only a press cutting from 1919 reporting 66 dead and 6 missing from over 350 who served. By matching CWGC records with the original club membership records, over 70 names have been identified and the work continues.
The project took one junior team to the Somme and Compiegne to play rugby in tribute to that lost generation of players and to discover more about their own forebears' war lives.
Stephen is and Head of Youth Development at Rosslyn Park and his personal interest in WW1 comes from his grandfather who fought from 1914 and survived.
If you are interested in other rugby players commemorated by the Commission from around the Commonwealth, please look at our Rugby and the Two World Wars Information Leaflet.

Battles this month.
22 April – The Second Battle of Ypres begins with the Germans using poison gas against French troops. A five mile gap is made in the Allied line but the Germans are hesitant in their advance. Due to the bravery of Canadian troops – without any protection against the gas – the gap in the line is plugged and the immediate danger averted. The Battle continues for a month, Commonwealth casualties (killed, injured, gassed and missing) amounted to nearly 60,000.

Responsibility for the war graves in Sierra Leone rests with the Commission's Outer Area office which is based in Maidenhead in the UK.
