Welcome!
Welcome to our October Newsletter
September seems to have flown by and October is already upon us. Plans are already underway throughout the country and indeed the world for Remembrance ceremonies next month. I include a few with which we are involved, but hope to include a wider feature next month.

Fromelles Update
If you have not already done so, do check out the Fromelles website which is regularly updated.
The website www.cwgc.org/fromelles also has its own newsletter, and contains very interesting background information. Excavation has now been completed and work is now well underway with the building of the cemetery.
Monday 19 July 2010: Commemorative Ceremony
Before you make any arrangements to attend this ceremony, please read the information in this report. Further Details here>>>>>
Visiting a cemetery?
This section continues our focus on our cemeteries and how they operate.
Have you ever wondered how Commission cemeteries are maintained? In France, mobile groups have been maintaining the cemeteries for over 80 years.
A most interesting leaflet entitled Work of a Mobile Group, highlights their history, showing you the extent of this task and how life has changed over the years for Commission staff (Note: this leaflet is 4.5mb and can take a while to download on some machines)
Are you visiting France or Belgium? If so, did you know the Commission produces an atlas of its cemeteries?
Michelin Road Atlas: Cemeteries and Memorials in Belgium and Northern France (a compact guide covering the areas with the densest population of war cemeteries in northern France and Belgium, including Normandy. Cost £7.00)
Out and about
Stratford Upon Avon airmen remembered
On Monday 14th September 2009, at Stratford-Upon-Avon Cemetery in England, a new type of information panel was installed. Watch the video for further information.
65th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden
Our mobile exhibition stand was at Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th September as part of the 65th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden. On Sunday the cemetery was the venue for the moving Service of Remembrance when local school children laid flowers on the graves of each of those who died liberating their country. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you who attended these commemorations at what was a very moving, but spectacular event.
Commissioners visit Fromelles
On 3 September, Commissioners visited Fromelles to see the ongoing work. Keith Simpson MP, one of our Commissioners, wrote his experiences up for the Fromelles blog which you can read here.
Commission's work in Canada
Following on from the updates in earlier newsletters of the work carried out on the Commission's behalf by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage in New Zealand, we now include a report from our Canadian Agency, based in Ottowa and responsible for maintaining all our graves and memorials in North America.
The report can be found here. See also RELATED LINKS>>>>
A-Z of countries
We continue our monthly feature, working our way through the alphabet, focussing on some of the more unusual places where we have a commitment
This Month.......Fiji and The Falklands
The other F's are Faroe Islands, and of course France!
Ghana or Gibraltar? Is anyone you know commemorated in either of these countries, which we may be able to include in the next issue?
Remembrance around the world
Remembrance is an important time for teachers and schools
Our new Learning Zone which gives access to our cross-curricular resources, provides particularly useful information for Remembrance. If you know any teachers or students who might find this helpful, please pass this newsletter on.
Remembrance Ceremonies
It is impossible for the Commission to list all the cemeteries and memorials in its care where Remembrance Ceremonies will take place this November. We do have details of some, however, and attached is a list for information. It will be updated in the next newsletter.
A special event will also take place this year honouring the WW1 generation. Further information can be found on the Ministry of Defence website SEE RELATED LINKS>>>
