70th Anniversary of the Dunkirk rescue: Operation Dynamo

From 27th to 30th May, various events will be taking place to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the rescue of service men and women from Dunkirk during the Second World War.

Norfolk Line ferries have kindly invited the Commission to stage a special exhibition on the “Veterans' Ship” – departing form Dover at 10am on the 27th. You can also view a small exhibition by the Commission at the Memorial du Souvenir, the Dunkirk War Museum in Dunkerque.

More information about local events happening during this commemoration can be found afrom the Dunkerque Office de Tourisme

Further information on the Commission's commitment in Dunkirk and other cemeteries within the locality, can be found in our information leaflet Dunkirk and the Fall of France.

65th Anniversary of the Liberation of The Netherlands

Many ceremonies will take place at Commission cemeteries in the Netherlands during the 4th to 6th May 2010, with many senior national representatives attending.

Fromelles Update

Fromelles Update

Work continues at Fromelles

In the last month, and taking advantage of the excellent spring weather, staff at the new Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery have been working very hard installing headstones, laying the turf and even planting the roses to ensure the cemetery is complete in time for the dedication ceremony on 19th July 2010, the 94th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles.

Public attendance at the opening ceremony

Information about public attendance at the ceremony on 19th July 2010 and how to obtain tickets will be available shortly

Please check the Commission's website and the Fromelles website for regular updates.

Commission's work in Malaysia

Commission's work in Malaysia

Continuing our review of the Commission's commitment around the world, our Media Manager, Ranald Leask has produced a video of his recent visit to Taiping War Cemetery, near Ipoh in central peninsular Malaysia.

Over 4,600 Commonwealth war dead of the two world wars are buried or commemorated in Malaysia in fourteen sites, the principal ones being at Taiping, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan. The Labuan Memorial in Labuan War Cemetery commemorates nearly 2,300 war dead who have no known graves, though some of those commemorated may lie in the war cemeteries as unidentified burials.

Taiping War Cemetery, featured in the video, is the final resting place for over 850 men who fought against Japanese forces in the Second World War. Alongside British, Australian and Indian casualties lie Malays, Chinese and Gurkhas who all fell in the hard-fought struggle to defeat the Japanese. One of those buried at the cemetery is VC winner Arthur Scarf.

You can watch the video here.

Out and About

Out and About

Have you ever wondered how our headstones are produced?

We are often asked how our headstones are produced, how long they last before they are replaced, and why we decide to replace them.

Why not have a look at a new magazine article which has recently been added to our website  providing the answers to many of these questions entitled 'From the Rock to Remembrance'.

Customer Service Survey

Thank you to all of you who took part in the customer service survey a couple of months ago.  Over 300 of you took part and your results and comments have been particularly helpful.

Our results were also benchmarked against other UK organisations by the Leadership Factor and we are pleased to announce that the Commission's customer service standards continue to be in the top quartile of all organisations compared, in fact in the top 16%.

A full report on the survey results can be found online here

Once again, we would like to thank all those who took the time to respond to this survey, the information gathered enables us to progress and develop our methods of communicating the Commission's activities.

And finally.....

And finally.....

It is always a pleasure to hear from those of you who have visited our cemeteries in distant lands or taken part in ceremonies.

I recently heard from Rajeshwor, based in Imphal that on 7 April 2010, a commemorative event was organized at Imphal War Cemetery, north East India, where many of those who died in the Battle of Kanglatongbi are commemorated. The service included the reading of the roll of honour, a wreath laying ceremony and flowers laid at the grave of all those who died in the Battle. Many local residents also attended.

Do continue to keep us informed.
