Fromelles Update

Fromelles Update

New Fromelles Identifications Announced

The Australian and British government’s Joint Identification Board reconvened in London on 4 April 2011 as part of the continuing effort to identify some of the remaining 154 unknown soldiers found at Fromelles.

The Board considered all the available evidence, including anthropological, archaeological, historical and DNA information – the latter from samples acquired from additional families that have come forward since the first identification board in 2010.

A further 14 Australian soldiers have been identified by name as a result of the 2011 Board, bringing the total number up to 110 – a remarkable achievement. Unfortunately no British soldiers have yet been identified by name.

This year, the majority of the soldiers identified had been previously placed in the category of unnamed Australian soldier with only four being drawn from the unknown by name or army served. Families have been notified and new headstones, bearing the name of the casualty and a personal inscription (chosen by the family) will be manufactured and erected by the Commission in the near future.

The next identification board will be convened in April/May 2012 and both governments are still hoping more families will come forward.

For details on how to register with the project, or for more information about Fromelles, please visit the Commission's website

Special Note
Remembering Fromelles – the Commission’s exhibition about the Fromelles operation – is available to view at the Imperial War Museum in London until 29 May.

An Australian Second World War fighter pilot whose remains were discovered late last year, 66 years afte he died, was buried with full military honours at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy on 19 April.

The remains of RAAF Flight Lieutenant Henry Lacy Smith from Sans Souci in New South Wales, were discovered in November when his Spitfire plane was dug out of the Orne Estuary in Normandy.

Australian Veterans Minister, Warren Snowdon, and members of Flight Lieutenant Smith's family were present at the ceremony.

Click here to watch a short film about Flight Lieutenant Smith, including an interview with his great-niece and great-nephew at what proved to be a very emotional burial ceremony.

Second Lieutenant John Harrison VC, MC

Following the article on Rugby Remembers, featuring Rosslyn Park Rugby Club, Steve Keable, a long-time supporter of Hull FC got in touch asking us redress the balance by featuring a Rugby League player.

Jack Harrison made his debut on the wing against York on 5 September 1912 and went on to make 101 appearances, scoring 91 tries & 2 goals. He held the tries in game record with 6 against Wakefield until 1968 and holds the record number of tries scored in a season with 52. In the 1914 Challenge Cup final against Huddersfield he scored a try in a 6-0 victory and a memorial in his name has now been erected at Hull FC.  In addition a memorial fund has now been established and fundraising continues to enable an annual tournament in which local children play for the Jack Harrison VC Memorial Trophy.

2nd Lieutenant John Harrison is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France  More information about him, including the citation for his award can be found on the Commission's website.

Do you have a club or sportsman you would like included?  If so, please let us know.

This month we once again visit countries around the world, focussing on some of the more unusual places where we have a commitment

This month we focus on Tunisia, where over 9,700 Commonwealth war dead are commemorated by the Commission.  Responsibility for the war graves in Tunisia rests with the Commission's Western Mediterranean Office which is based in Rome.

Further information on Tunisia can be found here.

Don't forget..... The Commission publishes a series of free information sheets illustrating aspects of its work and major cemeteries and memorials.

These can be downloaded from our website, or copies are available from our Enquiries Section

Battles this month.

The Battle of Aubers Ridge - 9 May 1915

The Battle of Aubers Ridge began on 9 May 1915 when the First British Army made a two-pronged attack on the German line that ran from just south of Neuve Chapelle to Bois Grenier, some three miles north of Fromelles.

Further information about this battle can be found here.

Thank you once again to the Western Front Association for their assistance with this article.
