July Newsletter 2010

As we reach July, we are now approaching the final burial at Fromelles and the dedication of the cemetery.

Building this cemetery, the first for the Commission in 50 years, has been a rewarding experience and we do hope that following the commemorations when visiting Northern France, you take an opportunity to visit Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery

There will be coverage of the Dedication Ceremony on 19th July across the news channels, while a Channel 4 documentary on this project will air that evening.  See details below.

PDF of this newsletter is available here.

If you are interested in finding out more about the background to the cemetery at Fromelles, a commemorative publication has also been produced by the Commission and contains a foreword by HRH The Duke of Kent, President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The publication tells the story behind the search for these men, how they died, and the extraordinary efforts to give them the final dignity in death their sacrifice so richly deserves - in the first new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery to be built in more than fifty years.

The book is available for purchase through Tommies Guides, the Military Book Specialists, for £8.95.

Cemetery closures, work and visitor information

During the summer the following work will be taking place:

THIEPVAL MEMORIAL MAINTENANCE
The Thiepval Memorial will be undergoing maintenance during the period 19 July 2010 through to 31 July 2010.

The Memorial will remain open to the public, however access will be restricted at times during the work. Access to the Visitor Centre is unaffected.

In order to carry out this work in the most efficient manner, and to ensure visitor access is restricted for the shortest possible period, the Commission are using CAN London Ltd – a specialist roped access Contractor, to carry out the work.

The Contractor will be undertaking the following using an abseiling technique:

1. Removing the build up of algal growth

2. Treating all exterior surfaces with a biocide spray

3. High level brickwork repairs

The Commission would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

SERRE ROAD CEMETERY NO 2
A major renovation project at this cemetery will commence on 21 June 2010. In preparation for this, scaffolding will be erected to the entrance building on 14 June.

The cemetery and register will remain open to the public throughout the renovation – which is scheduled to be compete by late September 2010

If you are planning on visiting a cemetery or memorial, please check both the cemetery records and visitor information section on our website before your visit for up-to-date information.

Visiting a cemetery?

Visiting a cemetery?

We often receive enquiries about structures, horticulture and other items in our cemeteries.

Recently, we received an enquiry asking why was the gravemarker different from all the others in that it was made of metal.

This marker is called a temporary marker.  The Commission uses these markers, and others of a similar type, when the headstone has been removed for replacement or re-engraving.

Commissioners Visit to France

Commissioners Visit to France

Commissioners of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission meet four times during the year.

Last month, as part of one of these meetings, the Commissioners visited cemeteries in Normandy at which they were provided with information on how the standards of maintenance in war cemeteries are measured, and given an opportunity to assess these standards for themselves.

On the final day, Commissioners, members of the Royal British Legion and other local French dignitaries attended the burial of an unknown soldier at St Desir War Cemetery, Calvados.

You can find out HERE who our current Commissioners are.
