Comrades Marathon - South Africa
A unique living memorial - the Comrades Marathon
On 30 May 2010, an exceptional event will take place in South Africa.
For the 85th time, more than 20,000 athletes from all over the world will gather together to take part in a living memorial ‘to the spirit of the soldiers of the Great War’ – the 90 km (56 mile) Comrades Marathon, run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
This gruelling event was founded by First World War veteran Vic Clapham in memory of the endurance, hardships and camaraderie he witnessed among his comrades. The marathon, which has taken place every year since 1921 with the exception of the war years 1941-45, is today one of the world’s greatest races and stands as a unique act of remembrance for participants and spectators alike.
