Football legend David Beckham has lent his support to an engaging and imaginative new education resource from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Glory Days – Football in Times of War is a ten minute DVD aimed at engaging teachers and students with the website of the same name at www.cwgc.org/glorydays.
Introduced by David Beckham and animated football manager Boyce Dungood, it has been sent to all schools in the United Kingdom.
Produced with the support of the Daily Mirror and Mirror Football, the DVD makes inspiring viewing in its own right, with interviews with some of today’s stars as well as stories about football and footballers during the two world wars. In addition it will direct teachers and students to some innovative websites which make history come alive and relevant to the lives of young people today.
As David Beckham says,
“We often talk about footballers as heroes, but the REAL heroes were those men and women, some of them footballers, who gave their lives in the Two World Wars, and those servicemen and women who still fight for us today.
We should remember them always.”
Visiting a cemetery
This section continues our focus on our cemeteries and how they operate.
Laying a floral tribute
- If you are visiting a cemetery or memorial please do go ahead and lay a floral tribute. We ask that this is not permanent; it will be removed from the grave by our staff once it has faded.
- If you would like to lay a tribute and cannot visit yourself, further information can be found on this page
We understand that following a visit to a Commission cemetery or memorial, everyone has different questions they might like answered.

Remembrance Ceremonies
It is impossible for the Commission to list all the cemeteries and memorials in its care where Remembrance Ceremonies will take place this November. We hope the attached list will provide you with a guide to some of these events.
A special event will also take place this year at Westminster Abbey honouring the WW1 generation.
Further information can be found on the Passing of the Generation website, which includes links to teaching resources. SEE RELATED LINKS>>>

Our new Histories microsite was launched this week covering the campaign North Africa 1940-43.
- This continues our collaboration with the Imperial War Museum and is our first Second World War project following on from four earlier First World War Histories.
- The site will include battle narratives and a range of 'special topics' covering everything from biographies of the key commanders, the use of camouflage, to soldier slang
- The site isavailable at www.cwgc.org/northafrica.

Commission's work in the United Kingdom
Visitors to some UK cemeteries will have seen the extensive damage to turf caused by natural pests.
The most common culprits are crows - they rip at the turf in search of ‘leather jackets’, the larvae of the crane fly. Sharing their guilt are badgers rooting for chafer grubs. The chafer grubs eat the roots of the turf making it easier for the crows to go about their destructive business, and so the cycle goes on.
Dealing with this problem can be difficult and costly. Preventative treatment for the areas anticipated to suffer most is best carried out in May, otherwise the only option is to repair damage afterwards by re-turfing.
The problem is widespread but we will be working on affected sites in the coming months as time and resources allow. Your understanding in the meantime is much appreciated.
Answering your concerns
We are always delighted to receive any of your comments, suggestions, compliments and complaints. It is important to us that you pass on your feedback, so we can improve and develop our service to you.
The Commission received over 26,000 enquiries this year from around the world, of which only 173 were complaints. This figure is less than 1% of all the enquiries received by us during the year. We do understand that things can go wrong and we will always try to put things right.
We are also pleased to have received almost 600 compliments on all areas of our work.
