Learning Zone
The Learning Zone: Education and the Commission
For many years the CWGC has been producing education material to support teachers and students, and we are proud to be able to offer an exciting and diverse range of free cross-curricular resources through our Learning Zone website.
The Learning Zone has been specially designed to help teachers plan their lessons, assemblies and projects, and can be searched by subject and keystage level.
Our range of resources are available across a number of mediums, including print-based materials, DVDs, CD-ROMs and micro-websites devoted to individual topics.
One of our most popular micro-sites is “The Glory Days”, which features an interactive football game, a film of Theo Walcott and his grandfather, and an interview with David Beckham. Amongst all the action there is the opportunity to learn about some of the footballers who were killed or served in the two world wars, and other war-related football facts.
Our printed literature includes the “Poets of the Great War – the soldier poets” book, which provides pupils with background information about some of the poets who fought and died in the First World War, including Rupert Brooke, John McCrae and Wilfred Owen.
In addition to classroom resources, you will also find advice on planning cemetery and memorial visits, a helpful FAQ section, and links to some of the organisations with whom we have worked, such as the Imperial War Museum, the Western Front Association and the History Channel.
Scouts Resource
Being prepared for Scouts!
We have established a great partnership with The Scout Association, keen to emphasise that remembrance could be a year round activity, not just confined to a single day in November. To that end we produced a series of activities on the theme of The Battle of Britain, tailored to different sections from Beavers right through to Scout Network (6-25s) which appear on their website.
At the scout leaders’ reunion at Gilwell Park in early September, the CWGC stand was inundated by most of the 2000 people in attendance – or that’s how it felt! It was gratifying to hear so much positive feedback and delight that The Scout Association and the CWGC were collaborating.

Forever India: New Indian Education Resource
With the help and support of the Indian High Commission, we will be producing an education resource which examines the often overlooked contribution of servicemen and women from undivided India during the two world wars.
The first phase of the resource – a DVD for schools in the UK – will be launched later this month with a copy being sent to all schools.
This DVD will be followed by an education micro-website, due to be launched during 2011.
If you don't receive a copy at your school and would like one, please let us know by contacting us by email at CWGC Education. We would also like to hear your views on this resource.
Easy Read Leaflets
Easy Read Leaflets
We have long been conscious that our information leaflets are not ideal for people with learning difficulties or those for whom English is not the first language.
We want our information to be accessible to all so we have produced some basic leaflets in an Easy Read style – large font, clear illustrations, plenty of white space and language that is simple to understand.
Intended for adults as well as children, these were developed and trialled with pupils at two special schools in Sussex and proved a great success.
You can access one of our leaflets here.
Celebrating Remembrance with the Royal Albert Hall
Celebrating Remembrance with the Royal Albert Hall.
Celebrating Remembrance is a highly successful education programme led by the Learning and Participation team at the Royal Albert Hall and run in collaboration with the National Army Museum and the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
The Commission was delighted to be asked to support the project this year, which encourages educators and students to explore remembrance, abd the consequences and realities of war.
Following a visit to war graves in France and Belgium, a visit and INSET day at the National Army Museum, and meetings with some of the Chelsea Pensioners, the students and schools are tasted with creating a piece of artwork which demonstrates what remembrance means to them. The artwork is then exhibited at the Royal Albert Hall where up to 100,000 people will see it!
This year's exhibition will take place between 10 November and 9 December.
There will be open days for members of the public to view the exhibition on Tuesday 16 November from 11 - 2 and Saturday 27 November from 11 - 2.
